Johanna Augusta Braun was born on May 16, 1880 in Steinsdorf (the present day Polish village of Kamionka) Hagenau, Mohrungen County, East Prussia.

Johanna's parents were Christoph and Louise (Neumann) Braun. She was baptized at the Evangelical (Lutheran) church in Hagenau, which is now known as Chojnik, a village in the administrative district of Gmina Morąg, within Ostróda County, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in northern Poland.

Johanna was eight years old when her family departed from the port of Bremerhaven for the New World. She was with her father, her pregnant mother, and her three siblings. The family arrived May 16, 1890 at Baltimore on the S.S. Karlsruhe. The family promptly settled in Audubon, Iowa.

Johanna's father, Christoph, was critically injured in a work accident in the Charles Tramp brickyard in Audubon, after less than two months in the New World. He died on July 15, 1890. Two months later Johanna's mother, Louise, gave birth to another child, Elizabeth. The father's funeral was reportedly held at the Catholc church in Audubon - ut no record has been found there.

Louise married Henry Heuermann on March 10, 1891 in Audubon, Iowa. A year later they moved to Nobles Co., Minnesota with his and her children, including Johanna. Louise and Henry had a child together, Edward Heuermann, who was born in Worthington, Minnesota.

On April 3, 1898, Johanna was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Pfingsten, in Elk Twp., Nobles Co., Minnesota. Johanna married George John Engel on September 13, 1898 at the the same church.

George and Johanna farmed in Elk Twp. on the NE quarter of Sec. 18. Their first child, John George Engel was born there in 1899.
