Johann became an orphan at about eight or nine years of age in Germany and had to fight henceforth for his physical existence, Early in life he became a cabin boy on a ship, making trips for London. Later he became a sailor and made many ports to Great Britain & on the continent of Europe and even to New York.
On one of the trips to New York Johann "John" left his ship and traveled to Iowa where he met young widow, Anna Marie "Emma" Engel-Huber. John & Emma married on March 16, 1864 in Fairfaw, Benton County, IA. For nearly 20 years they resided on a farm in Iowa.
To this union nine children were born: Charles, Louisa, Arthur, John Jr., Martin, Adolph, Henry, Edwin & William were born in Iowa & Ralph (the youngest son) was born in Springfield, Greene County, MO. Louisa & Arthur died in infancy.
John & Emma moved their family to Missouri abt 1881 where John secured several hundred acres of wild land in Christian County, MO around Billings stayed there for about 2 months before moving his family to Springfield, Greene County, MO so his children could go to school and he could have a dairy business.
