On December 2, 1839 Anna Marie Köhl married "Georg" Engel in Friesenheim. Their first son, George Martin Engel, was born a year later in Friesenheim and died after a few weeks. By the time their next child, Emma, was born, the family had moved to Anna's home village, Bahlingen.
In early 1856 two of the children, Emma and John, departed with Anna's parents, Martin and Katharina Köhl, for America. They moved to the area west of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where two daughters of the Köhls already lived with their families. They were Peter and Barbara Fritz, and Jacob and Barbara Gasser.
The pastor in Bahlingen inscribed a Bible for the Engel family in 1857 and George and Anna, with their remaining children, Catharina, Geo. Jacob, Christine, Mary Magdalene, and the seven month old baby Salome, sailed for America.
The family boarded the ship Mercury (Havre Second Line) in Havre, France and arrived at Castle Garden, New York on 23 March 1857. The New York Times reported that on this voyage the ship had experienced heavy weather, started (or loosened) the cutwater, head rails, etc., with one death and one birth among the 160 passengers.
23 March 1857 Ship "Mercury" Passenger List Arrived at New York from Havre on March 23, 1857.

The family pressed on and settled in Sec. 17 on Clinton Township, Linn County, about four miles outside of Cedar Rapids.
George died November 1, 1870, possibly of typhoid fever. Anna died a few months later, on March 11, 1871.
Anna Engel's will was probated in Linn County, Iowa.
The Engel family bible presented by the pastor in Bahlingen remains in the family's possession to this day, 155 year later, It records in German script the deaths of George and Anna, Anna's father (Martin Köhl), and a son-in law (Jacob Huber). It also lists the births of some of the children and grandchildren.
